ADELANTO -- A multi-vehicle traffic accident on US Highway 395 and Auburn Avenue cost a man from Adelanto his life. The cause?
Police say 35-year-old Christopher Dixon of Adelanto was stopped in the northbound lane of US Highway 395, waiting to make a left-hand turn onto Auburn Avenue. During that time tragically, David Gillis, a 35-year-old man from the state of Georgia, was also traveling northbound on US Highway 395 and rear-ended Dixon. The impact forced Dixon’s vehicle into the southbound lane of the highway where it was broadsided by a Dodge Durango.
Dixon’s 1995 Chevrolet Caprice overturned during the accident. Police say that he died at the scene. The driver of the Durango and several passengers in his vehicle were hurt with minor to moderate injuries. They all were transported to hospitals for treatment. The driver of the Toyota Tundra who allegedly caused the domino accident was not injured according to police.
During the investigation, police determined that alcohol, drugs, and excessive speed did not appear to be a factor in the accident. However, distracted driving is suspected to be a factor. Police have revealed to HDdailynews.com that Gillis was allegedly operating a GPS device when he rear-ended Dixon.
The report has been forwarded to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for review. Police have given a recommended charge of vehicular manslaughter to Gillis in the accident.
