Apple Valley is off to a great start in 2023! We jumped right into our events, kicking it off with the Mayor’s Weight Loss Challenge on January 10th. The Challenge will run through March with scheduled events, including run/walks, challenges, trainings, and more. Winners receive cash prizes. I, along with council, joined in as well. Who doesn’t love a challenge? It’s been great to see the community come together as we work together to be fit in 2023. Did you miss the first weigh-in but still want to join the Challenge? It’s not too late! Come by the Apple Valley Conference Center on January 24th between 7:30am and 9am or 5:30pm – 7pm to sign up and weigh in! To learn more visit: www.av.town/mwlc

Want to get ahead in the Mayor’s Weight Loss Challenge and earn some bonus points? Kick off the New Year with a 5K, obstacle course, fun-filled run! Join us between 8am-10am at Civic Center Park and start at your own pace. All finishers receive a custom medal. Participants registered for the Mayor’s Weight Loss Challenge can join for free and receive bonus points for the Challenge!

Speaking of dropping some weight, each Saturday, Apple Valley residents can drop off tires, refrigerators, TVs, and hazardous waste at the Town’s weekly Household Hazardous Waste collection facility at 13450 Nomwaket Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information visit www.av.town/code or call (760) 240-7560.

Next store to our Household Hazardous Waste Facility is The Apple Valley Animal Shelter. This month the shelter is hosting the first low-cost vaccine clinic of the year on Thursday, February 2. Be sure to keep your pets healthy and bring them to the animal shelter for their vaccinations.

On Saturday, February 4, the Community Enhancement Department will host another Free Shred Fest at the Material Recovers Facility at 17000 Abbey Lane, Victorville, from 8 a.m. to 12pm, or until the shred truck is full. The Shred-Fest is free to all Victor Valley residents.  Bring up to four (4) 20-pound boxes of paper documents to shred.  No business materials.  Documents are shredded onsite.  Please load your documents for shredding in the trunk of your car to make unloading as easy and efficient as possible.

To end February, we have the Hoppy Trails Beer Run, on Saturday February 25th, that will conclude with a beer (or root beer) at Off the Grid Brewery in Apple Valley. Registration deadline is February 20. Pre-registered runners over the age of 21 is $30, and $35 if you register on-site. Runners under 21 are $20 for pre-registration, and $25 on-site. This event is free for those participating in the Mayor’s Weight Loss Challenge!
