BARSTOW – (INT) – A centerpiece of Barstow’s railroad history is about to be replaced.
The North First Avenue Bridge built in 1930 has been deemed structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.
It has served as the main thoroughfare for schools, hospitals and other services.
The existing two-lane bridge spans the BNSF railyard.
It will be replaced by a new bridge funded with a combination of resources including the Federal Highway Bridge Program, state funds, Measure I funds and $5 million from the City of Barstow.
A groundbreaking ceremony is planned in January.
