HESPERIA -- A traffic collision on Bear Valley Road at the intersection of Locust Avenue, in Hesperia cost an elderly woman her life yesterday.

Deputies say an 80-year-old man, driving a Buick La Sabre traveled west on Bear Valley Road in the left hand turn lane and a 37-year-old woman, driving a Ford Explorer traveled east on Bear Valley Road in the number 1 lane. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Buick made a left-hand turn in front of the Ford against the traffic signals solid red light. The front end of the Ford collided into the passenger side of the Buick, where a 79-year-old woman was sitting.

Emergency crews could not save the woman, despite using life saving measures. The passenger of the Buick was pronounced dead by rescue crews. The driver of the Buick, who was badly hurt, was transported to a trauma center for treatment. The driver of the Ford only had minor injuries. Police say they are not sure if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

Identification of the passenger of the Buick has not been released to the public until family can be notified first. Bear Valley Road from Cottonwood Avenue to Balsam Avenue was closed for several hours while deputies from the Hesperia Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) processed the scene.
